My eyes fly to Miaâs, hers wide and begging for help, as she struggles to find words to use to reply to her and she looks like a goldfish gulping for air, as she stares at me.
âScar ... leave it,â I growl into my coffee, my eyes not leaving her gorgeous green ones. Pushing my chair back, I join her in the kitchen, still hobbling on my crutches, and I drop my empty coffee cup into the dishwasher, moving to stand behind her, engulfing her small body in my arms, kissing her neck lightly. The crutches end up leaning against the kitchen counter as she runs her hands over the ropey muscles of my tanned forearms.
âMorning, baby. Did you sleep well?â I ask, nudging my nose into her hair to smell her shampoo scent.
âSomehow, I donât think you let her, boofhead. Didnât sound like there was much sleeping going on from what I heard, but it did sound much more interesting than my movie.â She smiles over the top of her coffee cup.
âOh, God. Kill me now!â Mia declares, cheeks flaming. She reaches her hands up to cover her face as she turns to my chest and buries her face against me, noticing for the first time I only have pyjama pants on, and sheâs leaning against my bare chest. My arm comes up to hold her head against me as I kiss the top of her hair firmly.
âMunchkin, enough! You should have gone up to your room if we were noisy, and watched your movie up there. Stop embarrassing Mia. Forget about her baby; sheâs just being mean!â I scoff, glaring at her, willing her to shut up.
âSorry Mia, heâs right ... itâs mean of me to make fun of you both, but youâll be happy to know that I did actually go up to bed not long after you, so I really didnât hear too much. Iâm just kidding around,â she tells us, coming over to us and Mia chances a glance in her direction, as she looks at us apologetically.
I rub my hands up and down her back as she smiles at Scarlett, reassuring her sheâs not angry or upset ... just embarrassed as hell. âShit, Scarlett, Iâm really sorry ... I had no idea,â Mia apologises.
âYeah, I got that you were a bit distracted. Oh, by the way, big bro ... well done!â She laughs and pats me on my shoulder, congratulating me, then quickly moves back out of my reach.
âPiss off, munchkin!â I growl as I try to grab hold of any part of her without letting go of Mia. My arm is still securely holding her head against my bare chest, as she smiles at our antics. Scarlett turns and runs upstairs to the safety of her room, and silence fills the kitchen with her departure.
âAre you okay? I mean, really okay? Are you sure? We can stay home today. I know your boss, I can make it happen, if thatâs what you want.â I tilt her face back slightly, looking deeply into her eyes as I frown.
